emacs-jabber software package provides Jabber client for Emacsen, you can install in your Ubuntu 16.10 (Yakkety Yak) by running the commands given below on the terminal,
$ sudo apt-get update $ sudo apt-get install emacs-jabber
emacs-jabber is installed in your system.
Make ensure the emacs-jabber package were installed using the commands given below,
$ sudo dpkg-query -l | grep emacs-jabber *
You will get with emacs-jabber package name, version, architecture and description in a table
